In this post I will help you to grow your subscriber list as well as build an engaged and loyal community.
So you’ve got your blog all set up and ready to rock! You’ve got great content and can’t wait to share it with the world! But for some reason no one wants to subscribe to your newsletter… You might say, what do I care? But trust me, you do.
Growing your subscriber list will help you build a loyal and strong community, increase your blog’s popularity as well as credibility – particularly important if you’re planning to work with brands in the future and MAKE MONEY with your blog.
So let’s think this through, why DON’T people subscribe? Put yourself in the shoes of your readers:
A. We’re swamped with information.
B. We’re spoilt!
That’s right – as a reader I won’t subscribe to anything, unless I get something in return. It could be an e-book, prize draw, webinar, toolkit, cheatsheet – anything I see as undeniably valuable.
Also, blogging has evolved: there are thousands of bloggers out there and the standards are now as high as never before! So to get your readers hooked you really need to give them an irresistible reason to subscribe!
And to prove you that it works, I’m going to *bribe* you with this ultimate cheatsheet of irresistible incentives for your own subscriber list, categorised into Fashion, Beauty, Lifestyle and Fitness.
Right, so now that you’ve found an incentive for your readers to subscribe – how do you practically get them to do it?
CREATE AN OPT-IN FORM
There are several great services that offer Opt-In Forms. Pricing usually starts around £10/month, but there are also a few free tools which I’m going to talk about today. Personally, I use MailMunch. It is easy to set up and it is free (unless you go for the premium version, but it’s absolutely not necessary if you use the freebie in a smart way – I’m going to teach you how).
Here are the opt-in forms that you can get with MailMunch.
As you’ve probably noticed on my blog, I personally love the slide box as well as embedded forms.
HOW TO SET UP AN OPT-IN FORM
– To get started, create a free account.
– Once signed in, click on New Form and choose the *free* simple theme
– Now you can customise your message – the incentive for your readers to give you their email address
– You can also add a beautiful image that will grab your readers attention (e.g see cheatsheet above)
– Customise your opt-in form by tweaking the colour of the button and adding more fields
– In Behaviour you can choose when and where your form will be displayed
– In the Integrate section you have the option to select double opt-in
– click Publish Form and you’re ready to go!
Bonus tip: if you have a very specific opt-in form like I do in this post and you want it to show only on one page, click on Behaviour / Display Rules/ Only show on / URLs exactly matching – and enter the URL of your blog post. Then once you’ve clicked Publish Form, click “Want the code” and get the html code that you can embed into your blog post.
Bonus tip 2: if you’re using WordPress I’d recommend to install MailMunch plugin.
WHERE TO ATTACH YOUR *SUBSCRIBER INCENTIVE*
You have several options here and it largely depends on the type of incentive you’re going for.
Once subscribed, the reader sees a “Thank You” notification. This is your chance to add a link to a hosting page with a PDF document, infographic, youtube video etc. You can also upload the PDF directly to your WordPress Media Gallery, however it might eat up all your server storage space if you do it regularly.
If you’ve clicked “double opt-in” you can send an automatic Thank You email and attach your “Incentive” directly to the email or (if it’s too big) include a link to the file hosting page.
FILE HOSTING PAGE – SUBSCRIBER LURE
WHY DO I NEED A FILE HOSTING PAGE?
As mentioned above, you could upload the PDF directly to your Media Gallery and then just use the document URL, but I would recommend not to fill your blog’s storage space with clutter – you don’t want to run out of space for your posts and images. (If you’re using WordPress you have 3GB storage space and need to pay a monthly premium if you want to upgrade to 13GB.)
I’ve checked tons of file hosting services and most of them either charge a monthly subscription or put limitation to download speed and run tons of adverts…
The only service I liked is BOX
NEWSLETTER – KEY TO BUILDING A COMMUNITY
Once you have subscribers, you need to convert them into your loyal readers. In other words, create a community around your blog.
There are tons of amazing Newsletter services – the two biggest are AWEBER and MailChimp.
I use MailChimp, simply because it’s free to start with… although I am thinking of upgrading soon as I want to try the automatic messaging feature.
I won’t go into too much detail with MailChimp as they have tons of tutorials and explanations on the website, but if you have a question – don’t hesitate to ask it in the comment section and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
Hope you enjoyed this post. Let me know which topics you’d like me to explore in the future: blog monetisation strategies, how to hack social media or how to engage better with your readers?
